Why Your Shoulders Feel Weak. It's Not Your Shoulders
If you've ever struggled to lift something overhead, felt your shoulder "give out" mid-throw, or noticed your arm tiring faster than it should during a simple task — there's a good chance the problem isn't your shoulder at all. It's what's happening at your shoulder blade.
We call it scapula control, and it's one of the most overlooked factors in both everyday function and sporting performance. Your shoulder blade is the platform everything else works from. Get that platform wrong, and no amount of arm strength will fix what follows.
The Shoulder Blade Is the Foundation, Not the Sidekick
Your arm doesn't just hang off your shoulder joint, it's anchored to a moving platform, the scapula, which itself is controlled by a group of muscles most people have never thought about: the serratus anterior, the rhomboids, the trapezius, and the rotator cuff working together to keep that platform stable through every single arm movement.
When that control is good, the shoulder blade glides, rotates, and stabilises in sync with the arm. When it's poor — usually from weakness, tightness, or just poor movement habits, the arm ends up working from an unstable base. The shoulder joint compensates by overworking, which is where pain, fatigue, and impingement creep in.
This isn't rare. Desk workers who sit rounded forward all day, anyone who's had a previous shoulder injury, and people who've simply never trained this area specifically all tend to develop the same pattern: a winging or poorly positioned shoulder blade that quietly limits everything the arm tries to do.
Everyday Activities That Expose Poor Scap Control
You don't need to be an athlete to feel this. Poor scapula control shows up constantly in daily life:
- Reaching into an overhead cupboard and feeling a pinch or strain
- Carrying shopping bags or a heavy backpack and feeling the shoulder fatigue early
- Pushing a heavy door, pram, or trolley and feeling like the effort is coming from the wrong place
- Lifting a child, a suitcase, or anything overhead and noticing your shoulder shrugs up toward your ear instead of staying down and stable
None of these feel like a 'shoulder blade problem' at the time. They feel like weakness. But weakness in the arm is very often instability further back, at the platform the arm is working from.
Where It Really Costs You: Sport and Performance
In sport, poor scapula control doesn't just cause pain, it costs performance, and the effect is sport-specific:
Throwing and overhead sports - Baseball pitchers, javelin throwers, and water polo players rely on the scapula rotating and stabilising perfectly through the throwing motion. Poor control here is a well-documented contributor to throwing-arm injuries and a hard ceiling on throwing velocity.
Swimming - Every stroke depends on the shoulder blade gliding cleanly through a huge range of motion, thousands of times per session. Swimmers with poor scap control are some of the most common shoulder pain presentations I see, regardless of how strong their arms are.
Tennis and racquet sports - The serve and overhead smash both load the scapula heavily. Without good control, players lose power on the serve long before they ever feel an injury coming.
Rugby, AFL, and contact sports - Tackling, fending, and contesting in the air all demand a stable shoulder blade to transfer force safely. A poorly controlled scapula is a common factor behind recurring shoulder instability in collision sports.
Gymnastics and CrossFit - Overhead pressing, handstands, and pull-up-based movements are entirely dependent on scapula control. This is usually where it shows up first, because these sports load the position so directly and so often.
In every one of these, the athlete often blames the shoulder joint itself. The real fix is almost always further back, at the platform.
Best Course of Action for Improving Scap Control
The good news is this responds well to the right self-management, applied consistently.
Release Tightness First
